How to love others?

Question: How to love people? How to extend our love to more people? How to bring more people to learn the Pure Land Dharma Door?

Answer: You have asked three questions. I can see you are very kind and compassionate. But it is not easy.

How to love people?

The easiest way is to stand on his point of views to make a decision.

We are born with self-attachment. We care for ourselves more.

When we love others, our self-attachment will be lightened.

In Buddhism, the basic requirement in the practice is to love others. The highest principle in loving others is to exhort them to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, to seek a rebirth in the Western World of Ultimate Bliss, to accomplish Buddhahood as this will enable them to leave the transmigrations in the three evil paths forever.

In the Book Zhuangzi-the Great Sect Master, there is an analogy.  When the spring water is drying up, two fishes are forced to come together. They help each other by blowing out saliva at each other so as to take a breath. This is the description of ‘Trying our best to take a breath’ so as to prolong our life. This is considered good with the two fishes helping each other. But it is still incomparable ‘to swim in the river and lake and forget about one another.’ In the river or lake, it is unnecessary to get so closed to each other, to moisturize each other with the blows of saliva.

It means that in the worldly realm, the most we can love others is to show our concern for them, to supply them with materials or to be concerned and cared for others’ emotional needs. This is like the fish blowing the saliva at each other to get some moisturization. But if we can advise others to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, this is the same like releasing the fish into the river or lake. It is because the Name Namo Amitabha Buddha is replete with inexhaustible love.

How to spread this love to more people? If we wish to love others, we must be full of love.

If our heart is loveless, what love can we give to others?

That is why, first of all we must feel the love of Amitabha Buddha for us.

We recite Namo Amitabha Buddha and personally feel the kindness, the compassion and love of Amitabha Buddha.

Only then, we can teach others to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, to spread this love.

In the Sutra, this is known as ‘the practitioner of Great Compassion’.

What should be done to bring more people to learn the Pure Land Dharma Door? This can only be done if we have faith in the Buddha before we teach this faith to others. Once you have obtained the bestowment of kindness, compassion and love from Amitabha Buddha, you will naturally do your part, in the most suitable way in accord with your ability, naturally. You will know what to do!

So, the first step is to feel the unending Great Love, Kindness and Compassion of Amitabha Buddha’s Rescue. This is the source of all love. It resembles our earth which receives all the energy with its source from the Sun. Without the sun, the earth is as cold as ice. The source of all the love in our heart comes forth from the Rescue of Amitabha Buddha.

如何爱人

问:如何爱人?如何将爱扩大给更多的人?如何令更多的人走进净土法门?

答:你提这三个问题,可见很有慈悲心,但这不太容易。

如何爱人?最简单讲就是站在对方立场为他考虑。我们有我执的观念,自我的东西比较多,爱人会淡化我执;爱人也是佛教最基本的修持和要求;爱人的最高原则就是劝他念佛往生西方极乐世界成佛,永离三恶道的轮回。

《庄子•大宗师》有个譬喻,泉水干涸的时候,两条鱼挤在一起,互相用湿气和唾沫来厮守、喘一口气,所谓“苟延残喘”,延续生命。这样虽然好,两条鱼互相帮助,但是不如“相忘于江湖”,在江湖中彼此用不着贴这么近,你吐沫来湿我、我吐沫来湿你。

这也是代表我们人世间,其实我们爱人家,仅仅是人情的冷暖,或者是物质、情感上的关爱,就像鱼吐唾沫互相打湿一样。如果我们能劝人念佛,就如同把鱼放在江湖里面,因为这句名号是阿弥陀佛无尽的爱心。

如何将爱扩大给更多的人呢?我们爱人家,自己要有爱。如果我们心中没有爱,拿什么去爱人家呢?所以,要先从阿弥陀佛那里领取爱,念佛感受弥陀的慈悲和爱心,然后去教人家念佛,传播这个爱心。经中说,这叫“行大悲者”。

如何令更多人走进净土法门呢?就是自信教人信。自己得到弥陀的慈悲救度和爱心加持,就会自自然然地去做,也会自自然然有适合的方法显示出来,知道该怎么去做。

所以,第一步就是要感受弥陀的无尽大爱、慈悲救度,这是一切爱心的来源。就像地球上的一切能量来自太阳,没有太阳的话,地球就冰冷;我们内心一切爱的来源,就是阿弥陀佛的救度。

You see, Amitabha Buddha is here. I am leaving!

I can still hear his voice but he has already attained a rebirth

<聲猶在耳,人已往生>

For three generations my family are vegetarians. I have been a vegetarian since I was young. I learn the Buddha Dharma and I also uphold the Bodhisattva precepts. But my brother Hu Xue Hui does not have faith in the Buddha. He is a heavy smoker, a drunken person, with many bad habits. It is impossible to change him. I do not even dare to advise him to take refuge in the Triple Gem, what is more to ask him to uphold the precepts, to practise the Dharma. I was very worried for him.

In the year 2002, my brother was already seventy years old. Because of his bad habits, he was infected with the last stage of lung cancer. I thought maybe it was the right time to exhort him to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. I dared not tell him about a change in his habitual way of life. Anyway, he did listen to me and recited Namo Amitabha Buddha at home sincerely. At times he would also visit the temple to pray to the Buddha.

In the year 2004, the 4th day of the 10th Lunar month, my brother phoned me up, asking me to go over. When I arrived, my brother looked fine. We recited Namo Amitabha Buddha together. I felt very strange because my brother was quite excited that day. We continued to sit on the bed to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. At midnight, my brother said, ‘Amitabha Buddha is coming to bring me back.’

He sounded so relax. I simply could not believe in his words. This is because I know him thoroughly. He has so many bad habits. He did not even take refuge in the Buddha basically. He did not abide by the five precepts. He did recite Namo Amitabha Buddha but he did not even know about the transference of merits. So, will Amitabha Buddha come to welcome him in such a condition? I am not a good practitioner either. But I am still very much better than him. But I have not heard from Amitabha Buddha and I do not know when he will come to welcome me! So, when I heard that he was leaving with Amitabha Buddha, I could not believe it at all.

I was thus thinking but I still insisted to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha with him until early in the morning, that is the fifth day of the tenth Lunar month. My brother said, ‘You see, Amitabha Buddha is here. I am leaving.’

Urgently I asked, ‘Where is He?’  As I was sitting opposite to him while reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha, he pointed at my back and said, ‘He is there’ I quickly turned my head to take a close look but I did not see anything. I used my hand to pull at him and asked, ‘Where is Amitabha Buddha? Where is Amitabha Buddha?’ I asked him twice continually but I could not move him. There is no answer either. Suddenly I turned back and looked at him. I was really shocked. My brother was right. Amitabha Buddha had already come and brought him along.

The time taken from the instance I turned my head and looked back was only a few seconds. But my brother had already attained a rebirth, still sitting there. At that instant, I was so joyful yet my heart was very sad. My face was wet with tears.

My sister-in-law was upstairs and she heard our voice. She descended from the staircase and asked, ‘What are you two talking about? Your loud voice had woken me up.’ I told her, ‘Amitabha Buddha has already brought my brother home’

She said tearfully, ‘But wasn’t he still talking just now?’

‘Yes, you are right. Amitabha Buddha is truly kind and compassionate. Please do not cry. Let us recite Namo Amitabha Buddha to send him to Pure Land.’

So, in this way, our whole family recited Namo Amitabha Buddha. After eight hours, we cleaned up his body and changed clothes for him. Brother’s body was very soft and he looked so nice. After three days, many people came to the funeral to have a look at him. They said that they had never seen such a handsome death man. Among the relatives, a few of them are touched by his death and they have started to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Reflecting on this incidence, my brother should have known that he was going to attain a rebirth when he phoned me up. But he did not say anything. Maybe he knew that I would not believe in him. At mid-night, the fourth day, he said Amitabha Buddha was coming to bring him home. Maybe this is a signal for me. At that time, if I were to ask him, maybe he would tell me more. The problem is that I do not believe in him. That is why I did not bother to ask anything. Finally, when he said that the Buddha was there and it took only a few seconds for him to leave. I simply had no chance to ask any question. I am very regretful thinking about this. If I could believe in him earlier, and asked him what he had seen, asked for his opinions, it would be the best.

Anyway, my brother had left, in the most carefree way. He is the best example in the practice of Amitabha recitation to attain a rebirth. Truly speaking, he only knows the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha. Other than this recitation he knows nothing.

My brother’s attainment of rebirth has truly shaken me up. I have learnt a lot from him. In fact, I often look down on him as he can only recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. Unlike me, he did not uphold the precepts, did not take vegetarian diet, did not take refuge. He knows nothing about Sutras, mantras or cultivation. I was thus thinking, thousands of people can attain a rebirth, millions of people can attain a rebirth but I did not think he can attain a rebirth. But his attainment of a rebirth was because of his exclusive recitation of Amitabha Buddha. And he had left in such a wonderful way. All the time I was thinking I was much better than him. Only now I realize that he was very much better than me by so many times.

He had set a good example that the attainment of a rebirth does not rely on one’s personal effort. It relies totally on the strength of Amitabha Buddha’s Vows. When we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, Amitabha Buddha will surely rescue every one of us to his World of Ultimate Bliss, in the Western direction, without leaving anyone out. As people have said, the strength of a good example is inexhaustible. The attainment of rebirth by my brother had truly release me from all my doubts and worries. My faith was greatly enhanced. From now onwards, I will learn from my brother and let go of my egoistic self -effort. I will recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively until my last breath. Namo Amitabha Buddha!

Having faith in the rescue of Amitabha Buddha

Vowing to attain a rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha.

Crossing over all the living beings in the ten directions pervasively.

我家三代吃素,我很早也吃素、學佛,並受了菩薩戒,但弟弟胡學輝並不信佛,抽煙、喝酒,習氣很重,無法改變,我連勸他皈依都不敢,更不用說其他的持戒、修行了,只能為他乾著急。

二○○二年,七十歲的弟弟,因長期不良生活習慣,得了晚期肺癌。我想或許機緣到了,便試著勸他念佛,而隻字不提改變他的生活習慣。他也聽勸,老老實實在家念佛,有時還到寺院去拜拜佛。

二○○四年的農曆十月初四,弟弟打電話讓我去。我去後,看到弟弟精神狀況都還不錯,就陪他一起念佛。說來也奇怪,那天弟弟很興奮,我們就一直坐在床上念佛。到了半夜,弟弟說:「阿彌陀佛要接我走了。」

他說著很輕鬆,但我完全不相信他說的話,因為我太瞭解他了:壞習氣那麼多,最基本的皈依、五戒都沒有,雖念佛連怎麼回向都不會,就他這個樣子,阿彌陀佛現在能來接他往生嗎?我雖修的不算好,比他還是強許多,阿彌陀佛也沒有說什麼時候來接我啊。所以聽他說佛要接他走,我根本就沒當回事。

儘管這樣想,我還是堅持和他一起念佛,到了天快亮的時候,也就是農曆十月初五,弟弟說:「你看,阿彌陀佛來了,我要走了。」

我急切地問:「在哪兒?」

因為我和他是對面坐著在念佛,他朝我背後指了一下說:「在那兒。」

我馬上回頭仔細看,沒看見。就用手去拉他,問:「阿彌陀佛在哪兒?阿彌陀佛在哪兒?」連續拉了兩次問他,沒有拉動,也沒有回答。

這才猛然回過頭來看他,就這一看讓我驚呆了:弟弟說得一點都沒錯,阿彌陀佛是真的來了,並且已經把他接走了。

從我回頭,前後也就幾秒種吧,弟弟就這樣坐著往生了。此時的我,悲喜交集,淚流滿面。

樓上的弟媳聽到我們說話的聲音,邊下樓邊說:「你們哥倆這麼大聲在說什麼?把我都給吵醒了。」

我告訴她:「阿彌陀佛已經把老二接走了。」

她邊哭邊說:「剛才不是聽他還在說話嗎?」

「是啊。阿彌陀佛真的是太慈悲了,請妳不要哭,我們來一起念佛送他。」

就這樣我們全家都念佛,八個小時後,為他沐浴更衣,弟弟全身柔軟,面相非常好看。三天後出殯時,引來了好多圍觀的人,都說從沒見過比生前還要漂亮的死人,親屬中有幾個都因此而念佛了。

回想起來,弟弟打電話給我時,應該確知他要往生了,但他不說,可能知道我不會相信吧。初四半夜他說阿彌陀佛要來接他走了,應該是給我消息,如果那時我能問問,也許他會說些什麼給我聽的,但我一點不相信,所以問也不問。等最後他說佛來了,到走只有幾秒鐘,我問什麼都來不及了。想起來真後悔,如果早一點相信他說的,問問他見到什麼,有什麼心得多好啊。

但不管怎麼說,弟弟走了,走的很自在,他的念佛往生本身就是最好的說明。他是真正的只會念一句南無阿彌陀佛,其他什麼都不會。

弟弟的往生,給了我很大的震動、很大的教育,因為我平時看不起他,實在說是看不起他只會念這一句佛,沒有像我持戒,沒有像我吃素,沒有皈依,什麼經咒、什麼修行都不會,我想千人往生、萬人往生,也輪不到他往生,但他恰恰是成就在這一句佛號上,而且往生的這樣好。我平常自認為超出他許多,這才明白他不知要超出我多少倍。

他讓我徹底明白了往生不是靠我們自己的力量,而是靠阿彌陀佛的願力。我們稱念南無阿彌陀佛,阿彌陀佛就會一個不漏的,把我們救到西方極樂世界去。人說榜樣的力量是無窮的。弟弟的往生,使我完全消除了疑慮,增強了信心。從今往後,我要學習我弟弟,徹底放下自以為是的心態,老老實實靠定一句名號,念到最後一口氣。南無阿彌陀佛!

The Sutra in Praise of the Pure Land and the Embracing of the Buddha

Translated by Xuan Zang the Tripitaka Dharma Master in respond to the Imperial Order of the Tang Dynasty

Thus, I have heard, at one time, Bhagavan was at Sravasti in Jeta Grove, the Garden of the Benefactor of Orphans and the Forlorn, together with the multitude of Great Bhikshus 1,250. All of them are the Honoured Sravaka, the Great Arahants who are well known Good Knowing Advisers. They are the Honoured One Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakasyapa, Aniruddha such Great Sravaka who act as the Leaders. Moreover, together in the assembly are the immeasurable Bodhisattva Mahasattvas who are dwelling on the position of No-retreat, who are replete with immeasurable merits and virtues and myriad adornments, namely, the Wonderfully Auspicious Bodhisattva, the Invincible Bodhisattva, the Constant Diligence Bodhisattva, No-resting Bodhisattva and Bodhisattvas such like these who act as the Leaders for the multitude. Moreover, Sakra Indra, Great Brahman Heavenly King, the Master of the Endurance Realm, the Four Kings who Protect the World are the leaders of the hundreds of thousand kotis Nayuta multitude of heavenly beings and immeasurable devas, Asura and others from other parts of the world, gathered together to attend the assembly to listen to the Dharma.

如是我聞:

一時,薄伽梵在室羅筏,住誓多林給孤獨園,與大苾芻眾,千二百五十人俱,一切皆是尊宿聲聞,眾望所識大阿羅漢,其名曰:尊者舍利子、摩訶目犍連、摩訶迦葉、阿泥律陀,如是等諸大聲聞,而為上首;復與無量菩薩摩訶薩俱,一切皆住不退轉位,無量功德,眾所莊嚴,其名曰:妙吉祥菩薩、無能勝菩薩、常精進菩薩、不休息菩薩,如是等諸大菩薩,而為上首:復有帝釋、大梵天王、堪忍界主、護世四王,如是上首百千俱胝那庾多數諸天子眾,及餘世間無量天人阿素洛等,為聞法故,俱來會坐。 

At that time, the World Honoured One told Shariputra, ‘Presently, do you know that in the West, after travelling pass hundreds of thousands kotis Nayuta Buddha Lands, there is a World known as Ultimate Bliss? There is a World Honoured One by the Name Immeasurable Lifespan, Immeasurable Lights, the Thus Come One, the One who accepts offerings, the One of Proper and Equal Enlightenment, the Perfection of the Ten Names. Now, he is dwelling in that Land, stabilizing and upholding the Land, speaking the profoundly deep, wonderfully subtle Dharma for the living beings, so that they will obtain the most supreme benefits and dwell serenity bliss.

爾時世尊告舍利子:

汝今知不?於是西方,去此世界過百千俱胝那庾多佛土,有佛世界名曰極樂。其中世尊名無量壽,及無量光,如來、應(供)、正等覺,十號圓滿,今現在彼,安穩住持,為諸有情宣說甚深微妙之法,令得殊勝利益安樂。 

Moreover, Shariputra, what are the causes and conditions for the Buddha’s World to be known as Ultimate Bliss?

又舍利子,何因何緣彼佛世界名為極樂?

Shariputra, the sentient beings in that world do not have any worries and sufferings in body and mind. They only experience the immeasurable purity, joy and bliss. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

舍利子,由彼界中諸有情類,無有一切身心憂苦,唯有無量清淨喜樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the Pure Buddha Land of the World of Ultimate Bliss, everywhere is surrounded by seven layers of wonderful jewel railings, seven layers of jewel palm trees. Covering from above are seven layers of wonderful jewel nettings, surrounding the Land in many layers. The nettings are interlaced with the adornments of four jewels namely the jewels of gold, silver, lapis lazuli and crystal.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,處處皆有七重行列妙寶欄楯、七重行列寶多羅樹,及有七重妙寶羅網,周匝圍繞,四寶莊嚴—金寶、銀寶、吠琉璃寶、頗胝迦寶,妙飾間綺。 

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land, the myriad wonderfully intricate adornment of merits and virtues are extremely lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

 舍利子,彼佛土中,有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss the Pure Buddha Land, the ponds of Seven wonderful jewels can be seen everywhere. They are fully filled up with the water of eight merits and virtues. What is meant by the water of eight merits and virtues? The water is 1. Pure and clear 2. Cooling 3. Very tasty 4. Soft and light 5. Moisturizing 6. Calm and soothing 7. After drinking the immeasurable sufferings such as hunger, thirst and other illnesses are eradicated 8. After drinking, the water nurtures the various roots and the four elements besides his various supreme good roots are greatly enhanced. Living beings of abundant blessings love to drink it.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,處處皆有七妙寶池,八功德水彌滿其中。何等名為八功德水?一者澄淨;二者清冷;三者甘美;四者輕軟;五者潤澤;六者安和;七者飲時除飢渴等無量過患;八者飲已定能長養諸根四大,增益種種殊勝善根。多福眾生常樂受用。

The bottom of the jewel ponds is spread with golden sands. On the four sides of the pond are the beautiful staircase which are adorned with the four jewels. Surrounding the ponds are rows of wonderful jewel trees which are decorated alternately. The trees are most fragrant. They are intricately lovely with the adornment of seven jewels. The seven jewels are 1. Gold 2. Silver 3. Lapis-lazuli 4. Crystals 5. Red pearls 6. Asmagarbha 7. Tricdacna

The ponds are often covered with lotuses of myriad mixed colours. They are of the size of wheels on vehicles. The green lotuses reflect the green lights, with green shades. The yellow lotuses reflect the yellow lights with yellow shades. The red lotuses reflect the red lights with red shades. The white lotuses reflect the white lights with white shades. The four types of lotuses reflect the corresponding four lights and four shades.

是諸寶池,底布金沙。四面周匝,有四階道,四寶莊嚴,甚可愛樂。諸池周匝,有妙寶樹,間飾行列,香氣芬馥,七寶莊嚴,甚可愛樂。言七寶者:一金,二銀,三吠琉璃,四頗胝迦,五赤真珠,六阿濕摩揭拉婆寶,七牟娑落揭拉婆寶。

是諸池中,常有種種雜色蓮華,量如車輪,青形青顯青光青影,黃形黃顯黃光黃影,赤形赤顯赤光赤影,白形白顯白光白影;四形四顯四光四影。 

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land, the myriad wonderfully intricate adornment of merits and virtues are extremely lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss the Pure Land, the immeasurable, limitless music is often played naturally in a serene and beautiful way. On listening to the wonderful music, the sentient beings will have their evils and afflictions fully eradicated. Immeasurable wholesome dharma will gradually grow and  swiftly they will be certified to the Unsurpassed Proper Equal Bodhi.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,自然常有無量無邊眾妙伎樂,音曲和雅,甚可愛樂。諸有情類聞斯妙音,諸惡煩惱悉皆消滅,無量善法漸次增長,速證無上正等菩提。

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land, the myriad wonderfully intricate adornment of merits and virtues are extremely lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, the ground of the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land is composed of genuine gold which is soft in contact. It is shiny, fragrant and pure and is adorned and interlaced with immeasurable, limitless wonderful gems.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,周遍大地真金合成,其觸柔軟,香潔光明,無量無邊妙寶間飾。 

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land, the myriad wonderfully intricate adornment of merits and virtues are extremely lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, all kinds of supremely wonderful heavenly flowers are often rained down in the six periods of time in the day and night. The flowers are brightly shiny, moist, fragrant and pure. They are intricately soft with mixed colours. On seeing them, one will feel calm at ease but with no attachment. They will be enhanced with immeasurable, innumerable, inconceivable supremely wonderful merits and virtues. Throughout the days and nights, sentient beings will often bring along the flowers and make offerings to the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan. Every day, in the morning, they will carry these heavenly flowers and fly to the immeasurable world in other directions to make offerings to the hundreds of thousands Kotis Buddhas. Everyone will bring along and spread hundreds of thousands kotis flowers from the trees to make offerings to all the Buddhas at the Buddha’s dwellings. Then, they will return to their Land and travel in the heaven or take a rest.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,晝夜六時常雨種種上妙天華,光澤香潔,細軟雜色,雖令見者身心適悅,而不貪著,增長有情無量無數不可思議殊勝功德。彼有情類,晝夜六時常持供養無量壽佛。每晨朝時,持此天華,於一食頃,飛至他方無量世界,供養百千俱胝諸佛,於諸佛所,各以百千俱胝樹華,持散供養;還至本處,遊天住等。 

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land there are these myriad wonderfully decorative adornments of merits and virtues which are so lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss. 

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, myriad birds of mixed colours can often be seen. They are uniquely lovely. There are the goose, wild goose, heron-(egret), swan goose, crane, peacock, parrots, kalavinka, jivajivaka and others. All these birds will always get together throughout the six periods of time in the day and night to sing in the most beautiful voice. They will sing in accord with their species to propagate the wonderful dharma. The teach the dwelling in Profound Mindfulness, the Proper severance, the profound dhyana, five roots, five strength, seven sections of Bodhi, the Eight-fold Noble Paths sections and other immeasurable wonderful dharma. On hearing their teachings, living beings in that Land will adorn themselves with immeasurable merits and virtues in the Mindfulness of the Buddha, the Mindfulness of the Dharma and the Mindfulness of the Sangha.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,常有種種奇妙可愛雜色眾鳥,所謂:鵝、雁、鶖鷺、鴻、鶴、孔雀、鸚鵡、羯羅頻迦、命命鳥等。如是眾鳥,晝夜六時恆共集會,出和雅聲;隨其類音,宣揚妙法,所謂:甚深念住、正斷、神足、根、力、覺、道支等,無量妙法。彼土眾生聞是聲已,各得念佛、念法、念僧無量功德熏修其身。 

What do you think, Shariputra? Do the birds in that Land come forth from the evil paths, the animal realms? Do not behold such views! Why is this so? In that Buddha Pure Land there is no three evil paths. There are no names of the three evil destinies, what is more to find the myriad birds which are born from the sinful karmas of the animal realm? You should know that these birds are transformed by the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan as he desires them to proclaim the immeasurable Dharma sounds for the benefits and bliss of all sentient beings.

汝舍利子,於意云何?彼土眾鳥豈是傍生惡趣攝耶?勿作是見!所以者何?彼佛淨土無三惡道。 

尚不聞有三惡趣名,何況有實罪業所招傍生眾鳥!當知皆是無量壽佛變化所作,令其宣暢無量法音,作諸有情利益安樂。

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land there are these myriad wonderfully decorative adornments of merits and virtues which are so lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss. 

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, there is the constant wonderful breeze which blows on the jewel trees and the jewel nettings, producing the wonderfully subtle sound. It is as though hundreds of thousands kotis of heavenly music is played together at the same time. They produce the subtly wondrous sound. It is truly wonderful. In that Buddha Land, the wonderful breeze will blow on the myriad jewel trees and the jewel nettings, beating out the myriad subtly wonderful sounds, speaking the myriad dharma. On hearing the sound, the sentient beings in that Land will bring forth the mindfulness of the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha, and the arising of controlled thoughts of immeasurable merits and virtues.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,常有妙風吹諸寶樹及寶羅網,出微妙音,譬如百千俱胝天樂同時俱作,出微妙聲,甚可愛玩。如是彼土,常有妙風吹眾寶樹及寶羅網,擊出種種微妙音聲,說種種法。彼土眾生聞是聲已,起佛法僧念、作意等無量功德。 

Shariputra, in that Buddha Land there are these myriad wonderfully decorative adornments of merits and virtues which are so lovely. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss. 

舍利子,彼佛土中有如是等眾妙綺飾功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, there are such immeasurable, limitless, inconceivable rare matters. Even with the immeasurable hundreds of thousands kotis Nayuta tongues, with every tongue producing the immeasurable voice to praise His merits and virtues, there will still be no ending in such praises. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,有如是等無量無邊不可思議甚稀有事。假使經於百千俱胝那庾多劫,以其無量百千俱胝那庾多舌,一一舌上出無量聲,讚其功德,亦不能盡,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, what are the reasons for the Buddha to be known as Immeasurable Lifespan? Shariputra, the Thus Come One and the sentient beings can live immeasurable, innumerable Great Kalpas. As such the Thus Come One in that Land is known as Immeasurable Lifespan.

Shariputra, the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan has already attained Annutaraksamyaksambodhi for ten Great Kalpas.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,佛有何緣名無量壽? 

舍利子,由彼如來及諸有情,壽命無量無數大劫,由是緣故,彼土如來名無量壽。 

舍利子,無量壽佛證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提以來,經十大劫。

Shariputra, what are the reasons for the Buddha to be known as the Immeasurable Lights?

Shariputra, it is because the Thus Come continue to emit immeasurable, limitless wonderful lights to illumine the Buddha Lands in the ten directions pervasively to conduct the Buddha work without obstructions. As such the Thus Come One in that Land is known the Immeasurable Lights.  

舍利子,何緣彼佛名無量光? 

舍利子,由彼如來恆放無量無邊妙光,遍照一切十方佛土,施作佛事,無有障礙,由是緣故,彼土如來名無量光。 

Shariputra, such lovely and wonderful adornments of merits and virtues are accomplished in the Pure Land of the Buddha. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss. 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land, the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan has immeasurable Sravaka disciples who are the Great Arahants. They are replete with myriad subtly wonderful merits and virtues. The number is limitless and indescribable.

舍利子,彼佛淨土成就如是功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,無量壽佛常有無量聲聞弟子,一切皆是大阿羅漢,具足種種微妙功德,其量無邊,不可稱數。 

Shariputra, such lovely and wonderful adornments of merits and virtues are accomplished in the Pure Land of the Buddha. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

舍利子,彼佛淨土成就如是功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

 Moreover, Shariputra, in the World of Ultimate Bliss the Pure Buddha Land the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan has immeasurable Bodhisattva disciples. All of them will attain Buddhahood in one more lifespan. They are fully replete with myriad wonderfully subtle merits and virtues which are immeasurable, limitless and indescribable. Even with the passing by of innumerable Kalpas, it is still impossible to finish praising their merits and virtues.

Shariputra, such lovely and wonderful adornments of merits and virtues are accomplished in the Pure Land of the Buddha. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

又舍利子,極樂世界淨佛土中,無量壽佛常有無量菩薩弟子,一切皆是一生所繫,具足種種微妙功德。其量無邊,不可稱數,假使經於無數量劫,讚其功德,終不能盡。 

舍利子,彼佛土中成就如是功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。

Moreover, Shariputra, all the sentient beings who are born in that Land will attain no-retrogression in their practice. They will not fall into the dangerous evil destinies, the remote border lands as inferior men, mleccha the barbarians. They will constantly travel to the Pure Buddha Lands, with the supreme Conduct and Vows increased and enhanced in every mindfulness. They will surely certify to Annutaraksamyaksambodhi.

Shariputra, such lovely and wonderful adornments of merits and virtues are accomplished in the Pure Land of the Buddha. That is why it is known as the World of Ultimate Bliss.

又舍利子,若諸有情,生彼土者,皆不退轉,必不復墮諸險惡趣、邊地下賤、蔑戾車中;常遊諸佛清淨國土,殊勝行願念念增進,決定當證阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。 

舍利子,彼佛土中成就如是功德莊嚴,甚可愛樂,是故名為極樂世界。 

Moreover, Shariputra, sentient beings who on hearing the Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha in the West, the Pure Buddha Land with myriad adornments of immeasurable merits and virtues should bring forth the mind to seek a rebirth in that Buddha Land.

又舍利子,若諸有情,聞彼西方無量壽佛清淨佛土無量功德眾所莊嚴,皆應發願生彼佛土。 

Why is this so? It is because a man who is born in that Land will be together with all the Great Bodhisattvas who are adorned with immeasurable merits and virtues. He will be able to enjoy the Great Vehicle Dharma Bliss in this Pure Buddha Land which is replete with myriad adornments and immeasurable merits and virtues. He will not retreat from his practice. In every mindfulness immeasurable conduct and vows will increase and be enhanced. Swiftly he will certify to the Unsurpassed Proper Equal Bodhi.

所以者何?若生彼土,得與如是無量功德眾所莊嚴諸大士等同一集會,受用如是無量功德眾所莊嚴清淨佛土大乘法樂,常無退轉,無量行願念念增進,速證無上正等菩提故。 

Shariputra, sentient beings who are born in that Buddha Land have already accomplished immeasurable, limitless merits and virtues. Sentient beings with little good roots are unable to attain a rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha.

舍利子,生彼佛土諸有情類,成就無量無邊功德;非少善根諸有情類,當得往生無量壽佛極樂世界清淨佛土。 

Moreover, Shariputra, Good men and Good Women with Pure Faith will be able to hear the Name of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha which is replete with immeasurable, limitless, inconceivable merits and virtues and the adornment of merits and virtues in the World of Ultimate Bliss. After hearing the Buddha’s Name, they will think and be mindful of the Buddha and his Land for a day, or two days, or three days, of four days, or five days, or six days or seven days without confusion. At the death bed, these Good Men and Good Women will be surrounded by Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha and his retinues of immeasurable Sravaka disciples and Bodhisattvas. They stand before him and bestow upon him kindness and compassion. As such he will not dwell in confusion. After passing away, he will follow the Buddha’s assembly and be born in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha.

又舍利子,若有淨信諸善男子或善女人,得聞如是無量壽佛無量無邊不可思議功德名號、極樂世界功德莊嚴,聞已思惟,若一日夜,或二,或三,或四,或五,或六,或七,繫念不亂:是善男子或善女人臨命終時,無量壽佛與其無量聲聞弟子、菩薩眾俱,前後圍繞,來住其前,慈悲加祐,令心不亂;既捨命已,隨佛眾會,生無量壽極樂世界清淨佛土。 

Moreover, Shariputra, I could see the causes and conditions of such a great matter, the benefits of serenity bliss, so I speak about it honestly. If there are Good Men or Good Women who are with Pure Faith, who on hearing the Name of immeasurable Lifespan which is replete with the inconceivable merits and virtues, the Pure Buddha Land of the World of Ultimate Bliss, all of them should bring have faith in this and bring forth the Vow to cultivate accordingly so as to be born in that Buddha Land.

又舍利子,我觀如是利益安樂大事因緣,說誠諦語。若有淨信諸善男子或善女人,得聞如是無量壽佛不可思議功德名號、極樂世界淨佛土者,一切皆應信受發願,如說修行,生彼佛土。 

Moreover, Shariputra, as I am now praising the immeasurable, limitless and inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the eastern directions presently are the Immovable Thatagata, the Mountain Dhvaja Thatagata, Great Mountain Thatagata, Mountain Lights Thatagata, Wonderful Dhvaja Thatagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of a broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ‘All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如我今者,稱揚讚歎無量壽佛無量無邊不可思議佛土功德,如是東方亦有現在不動如來、山幢如來、大山如來、山光如來、妙幢如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在東方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the southern direction presently are the Sun and Moon Lights Thatagata, the Lights of Name Thatagata, the Great Lights of Skandhas Thatagata, Sumeru Light Thatagata, Limitless Diligence Thatagata and Buddhas such like theses equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是南方亦有現在日月光如來、名稱光如來、大光蘊如來、迷盧光如來、無邊精進如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在南方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌 相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the western direction presently are the Immeasurable Lifespan Thatagata, the Immeasurable Skandhas Thatagata, Immeasurable Lights Thatagata, Immeasurable Dhvaja Thatagata, Great at Ease Thatagata, Great Lights Thatagata, Radiant Lights Thatagata, Great Jewel Dhvaja Thatagata, Lights Emitting Thatagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是西方亦有現在無量壽如來、無量蘊如來、無量光如來、無量幢如來、大自在如來、大光如來、光焰如來、大寶幢如來、放光如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在西方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the northern direction presently are the Immeasurable Lights with the Adornments of Penetrative Wisdom of Enlightenment Thatagata, Immeasurable Heavenly Drums with the Vibrations of Greatly Wonderful Sound Thatagata, Great Skandhas Thatagata, Nets of Lights Tathagata, Sala Emperor Thatagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是北方亦有現在無量光嚴通達覺慧如來、無量天鼓震大妙音如來、大蘊如來、光網如來、娑羅帝王如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在北方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the nadir direction presently are the Thatagata who reveals Proper Principles of all the wonderful Dharma, who constantly emits fire, the King of Supreme Virtuous Lights, Lion Tathagata, Well known Thatagata, Reputable Lights Thatagata, Proper Dharma Thatagata, Wonderful Dharma Thatagata, Dharma Dhvaja Thatagata, Meritorious Virtuous Friend Thatagata, Meritorious Virtuous Name Thatagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是下方亦有現在示現一切妙法正理常放火王勝德光明如來、師子如來、名稱如來、譽光如來、正法如來、妙法如來、法幢如來、功德友如來、功德號如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在下方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the zenith direction presently are Brahman Sounds Thatagata, Constellation King Thatagata, Fragrant Lights Thatagata, Supreme Virtues Thatagata who resembles the Red Lotus, the Revelation of All Meanings and Benefits Tathagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in and cares for all living beings by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是上方亦有現在梵音如來、宿王如來、香光如來、如紅蓮華勝德如來、示現一切義利如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住在上方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the south-east direction presently are the Most Supreme, Expansively Great Cloud and Thunder Sound King Tathagata and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是東南方亦有現在最上廣大雲雷音王如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住東南方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the south-west direction presently are the Most Supreme Sun Lights Tathagata of Well-known Merits and Virtues and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是西南方亦有現在最上日光名稱功德如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住西南方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the north-west direction presently are the Immeasurable Merits and Virtues Tathagata of Bright Illumination Flaming King and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands.  Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是西北方亦有現在無量功德火王光明如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住西北方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the same way, dwelling in the Pure Buddha Lands in the north-east direction presently are the innumerable hundreds of thousand Kotis Tathagata of Expansive Wisdom and Buddhas such like these equivalent to the Ganges Sands. Every Buddha reveals the mark of broad and long tongue which covers up the three thousand great thousand worlds pervasively, circumambulates them from all sides. They speak honestly, ’All of you sentient beings should have faith and believe in the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddhas.’

又舍利子,如是東北方亦有現在無數百千俱胝廣慧如來,如是等佛如殑伽沙,住東北方自佛淨土,各各示現廣長舌相,遍覆三千大千世界,周匝圍繞,說誠諦言:「汝等有情,皆應信受如是稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。」 

Moreover, Shariputra, what are the reasons that this Sutra is known as the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddha.?

又舍利子,何緣此經名為稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門? 

Shariputra, in this Sutra, verses of praise are pronounced on the inconceivable merits and virtues of the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha. And all the Buddhas, the World Honoured Ones in the ten directions stay in their Land have revealed the Great spiritual transformation and spoken honestly to exhort all sentient beings to have faith in this Dharma as they desire to benefit all sentient beings expediently, bestowing upon them the serenity bliss. That is why this Sutra is known as the praise of the inconceivable merits and virtues of the Buddha Land, the Dharma Door which gathers in all living beings and the bestowment of care by all the Buddha.

舍利子 ,由此經中,稱揚讚歎無量壽佛極樂世界不可思議佛土功德,及十方面諸佛世尊為欲方便利益安樂諸有情故,各住本土,現大神變,說誠諦言,勸諸有情信受此 法。是故此經名為稱讚不可思議佛土功德一切諸佛攝受法門。 

Moreover, Shariputra, if good men and good women who have heard the Sutra, or who will hear the Sutra in future, or who are listening to the Sutra now, bring forth the deep faith and understanding. After they have brought forth the faith and understanding, they will surely be gathered in and care for by all the Buddhas World Honoured Ones equivalent to the Ganges Sands in the ten directions. Those who practise accordingly will surely attain non-retrogression in Annutaraksamyaksambodhi. All of them will surely attain a rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha.

又舍利子,若善男子或善女人,或已得聞,或當得聞,或今得聞,聞是經已,深生信解;生信解已,必為如是住十方面十殑伽沙諸佛世尊之所攝受;如說行者,一切定於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提得不退轉,一切定生無量壽佛極樂世界清淨佛土。 

That is why, Shariputra, all the living beings should have faith and understand my words, and the exhortations of the Buddhas, the World Honoured Ones in the ten directions. All of you should practise diligently and cultivate accordingly. Do not harbour doubts and worries.

是故舍利子,汝等有情,一切皆應信受領解我及十方佛世尊語,當勤精進,如說修行,勿生疑慮。

 Moreover, Shariputra, Good men and Good women who have already brought forth the mind, who will bring forth the mind, who are bringing forth the mind now to vow for a rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan, they will surely be gathered in by all the Buddhas World Honoured Ones equivalent to the Ganges Sands, in the ten directions. Those who cultivate in accord with the teaching will surely attain no-retreat from Annutaraksamyaksambodhi. All of them will surely attain a rebirth in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha.

又舍利子,若善男子或善女人,於無量壽極樂世界清淨佛土功德莊嚴,若已發願,若當發願,若今發願,必為如是住十方面十殑伽沙諸佛世尊之所攝受;如說行者,一切定於阿耨多羅三藐三菩提得不退轉,一切定生無量壽佛極樂世界清淨佛土。 

That is why, Shariputra,  all the Good men and Good women with pure faith should bring forth the profound faith and understanding in the World of Ultimate Bliss, the Pure Buddha Land of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha. They should bring forth the vows to attain a rebirth in the Land. Do not be heedless.

是故舍利子,若有淨信諸善男子或善女人,一切皆應於無量壽極樂世界清淨佛土深心信解,發願往生,勿行放逸。

Moreover, Shariputra, as I am now praising the merits and virtues of the inconceivable Buddha Land, the World of Ultimate Bliss of Immeasurable Lifespan Buddha, all the Buddhas, the World Honoured Ones in the ten directions are also praising my inconceivable, limitless merits and virtues. They thus say, ‘It is truly very rare and special for Sakyamuni Buddha, the Still and Silent One,  the Sakya Dharma King, the Thatagata, the Arahant, the Proper Equal Enlightened One, the One who is perfect in Clarity and Conduct, the Well Gone One, the One who Understands the World, the Unsurpassed One, Taming Hero, the Teacher of God and Man, the Buddha, the World Honoured One who has attained Annutaraksamyaksambodhi in the world of Endurance, the evil timespan of five turbidities, namely: the turbidity of Kalpa, the turbidity of sentient beings, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of views and the turbidity of lifespan as he desires to bring benefits and serenity to living beings. He speaks for them expediently this Dharma which is most difficult to believe.’

又舍利子,如我今者,稱揚讚歎無量壽佛極樂世界不可思議佛土功德,彼十方面諸佛世尊亦稱讚我不可思議無邊功德,皆作是言:「甚奇稀有!釋迦寂靜,釋迦法王,如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛、世尊,乃能於是堪忍世界五濁惡時,所謂:劫濁、諸有情濁、諸煩惱濁、見濁、命濁,於中證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。為欲方便利益安樂諸有情故,說是世間極難信法。」 

That is why, Shariputra, you should know that now in this defiled world of Endurance, during the evil timespan of five turbidities, I have attained Annutaraksamyaksambodhi as I desire to benefit all sentient beings so that they will dwell in serenity. I have spoken this Dharma which is most difficult for the worldly people to believe. It is truly a rare and inconceivable!

是故舍利子,當知我今於此雜染堪忍世界五濁惡時,證得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,為欲方便利益安樂諸有情故,說是世間極難信法,甚為稀有,不可思議! 

Moreover, Shariputra, in the defiled world of Endurance, the evil timespan of five turbidities, if a Good man or a Good woman with pure faith gives rise to faith and understanding on hearing this Dharma which is very difficult for the worldly people to believe, accepts it and upholds it, cultivates in accord with the teaching, you should know that such a man is very rare. He has already planted good roots at the dwellings of immeasurable Buddhas. This man will surely be born in the western World of Ultimate Bliss when he passes away, to enjoy the Dharma Bliss of the Great Vehicle, the various adorned merits and virtues of the Pure Buddha Land. Throughout the six periods of time in the day and night, he is closed to the Buddha of Immeasurable Lifespan, making offerings to him. He is able to travel to the ten directions to make offerings to all the Buddhas. He will listen to the Dharma teachings of all the Buddhas and receive the prediction of Bodhi by all the Buddhas. As such, his blessings, wisdom and merits will be perfected swiftly. He will swiftly certify to the Unsurpassed Proper, Equal Bodhi.

又舍利子,於此雜染堪忍世界五濁惡時,若有淨信諸善男子或善女人,聞說如是一切世間極難信法,能生信解,受持演說,如教修行,當知是人甚為稀有,無量佛所曾種善根;是人命終,定生西方極樂世界,受用種種功德莊嚴清淨佛土大乘法樂,日夜六時親近供養無量壽佛,遊歷十方,供養諸佛,於諸佛所聞法授記,福慧資糧疾得圓滿,速證無上正等菩提。 

After the Bhagavan has spoken this Sutra, the Honoured One Shariputra and all the Great Sravaka disciples, the multitude of Bodhisattva Mahasattva, the immeasurable heavenly beings, man, Asuras and others, the multitude of great assemblies are extremely happy on hearing the teachings of the Buddha. They have faith in the teaching, accept the teaching and cultivate accordingly.

時薄伽梵說是經已,尊者舍利子等諸大聲聞,及諸菩薩摩訶薩眾,無量天人阿素洛等,一切大眾,聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行。

稱讚淨土佛攝受經

Twelve Obeisances to Amitabha Buddha- by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva

Sincerely I take refuge and make obeisance to Amitabha Buddha in the West.

1.

Respectfully I bow to Amitabha Buddha, the Honoured One who is fully replete with wisdom and blessings, who is venerated by man and devas. In his subtly wonderful Land of Serenity Bliss, he is surrounded by immeasurable Bodhisattvas assemblies. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

2.

The golden form body is as pure as the Mountain King. Dwelling in Samantha he takes his steps that resemble the strides of elephants. His two eyes are as pure as the green lotuses. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

His face is wholesome and rounded, as pure as the full moon. His awesome lights resemble the shine of thousands of suns and moons. His voice resembles the Heavenly drum, the wondrous sounds of Kokila. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

4.

Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva venerates Amitabha Buddha, with the Buddha standing on his crown. The Buddha reveals the myriad wonderful marks with adorned jewels. He is able to subdue the deviant Maras who are very proud and arrogant. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

5.

He is incomparable as his purity is extensive, without any filth. He is replete with myriad virtues just as clear and pure as the empty space. He is all at ease as all his acts are beneficial. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

6.

His Name is heard by the multitude of Bodhisattvas in the ten directions. He is often praise by immeasurable Maras. For the sake of all living beings, he dwells on with the strength of His Vows. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

7.

The lotuses are grown in the pond which is laid with golden sands, interlaced with jewels. The seat of wonderful platform is accomplished from the wholesome roots. Sitting on the seat, he resembles the Mountain King. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

8.

All the Bodhisattvas who come from the ten directions reveal the spiritual penetration when they arrive at the Land of Serenity Bliss. Respectfully, they will always admire the countenance of the Honoured One. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

9.

All the phenomena existence are impermanent, no-self nor others. They resemble the moon in the water, lightnings, shadow and dew drops. For the sake of the assembly the Dharma is propounded but no words or names are pronounced. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

10.

In the Buddha Land of the Honoured One, no evil name exists. There is no woman nor the terror of evil paths. Sincerely the multitudes venerate the Honoured One. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

11.

The Honoured One possess immeasurable states of expediency which are free from evil destinies, evil teachers. Those who have attained a rebirth will attain no-retrogression until their arrival at the Bodhi. That is why I am making obeisance to Amitabha Buddha the Honoured One. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

12.

I am describing for you the merits and virtues of the Honoured One. His wholesomeness is pervasive and limitless, just like the sea water. All the good roots of purity are transferred to all living beings to attain a rebirth in His Land. Together with all living beings, may we attain a rebirth in the Land of Serenity Bliss.

十二禮

龍樹菩薩造 

至心歸命禮西方阿彌陀佛

稽首天人所恭敬,阿彌陀佛兩足尊,在彼微妙安樂國,無量佛子眾圍繞。

願共諸眾生,往生安樂國。

金色身 淨如山王,奢摩他行如象步,兩目淨若青蓮華,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

願共諸眾生,往生安樂國。

面善圓淨如滿月,威光猶如千日月,聲如天鼓俱翅羅,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

願共諸眾生,往生安樂國。

觀音頂戴冠中住,種種妙相寶莊嚴,能伏外道魔憍慢,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

諸有無常無我等,亦如水月電影露,為眾說法無名字,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

彼尊佛剎無惡名,亦無女人惡道怖,眾人至心敬彼尊,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

願共諸眾生,往生安樂國。

彼尊無量方便境,無有諸趣惡知識,往生不退至菩提,故我頂禮彌陀尊。

我說彼尊功德事,眾善無邊如海水,所獲善根清淨者,迴施眾生生彼國。

The form body of Amitabha Buddha resembles the great golden mountain. The World Honoured often dwell in Samantha in the four deportment. Dreams and Rebirths

Is it genuine if we have dreams on the deceased who is received by the Buddha?

梦中见到过世的人蒙佛接引是否真实

Question: In the dream, we saw the deceased was welcome by the Buddha. We could see the Buddha emitting lights. The lotuses on the ground are emitting lights. The deceased stood on the lotus and disappeared. Does it mean that he has already attained a rebirth?

Answer:

First of all, this is a good dream, an auspicious, a promising dream.

Does it mean that the deceased has already attained a rebirth?

We cannot arrive at a conclusion to determine whether he has attained a rebirth or not just based on a dream.

When I say may be because you did dream of him leaving on the lotus.

When I say may not be the case because it might be an illusion in the dream, the revelation of the consciousness.

Anyway, it is a good dream.

All of us hope to have a good night sleep.

How to have auspicious dreams at night?

You will have auspicious dream if you live your day auspiciously.

In the day time if you lead a confused life with upside down thoughts, how can you expect to have good dreams at night when you go to bed?

Basically, it is impossible.

We Amitabha reciters will live in accord with causes and effects.

In adversity we learn to tolerate. Our karmic hindrances will then be eradicated.

Our mind is all at ease.

In the day time, we will be able to maintain calmness, without much fuss. We are stable emotionally. After some time, we will surely be able to have a good sleep.

Some cannot sleep well because of their age and the bodily conditions. But they will still be more stable than others. This will surely be the case.

So, if you wish to have auspicious dreams, you should check if you live the day auspiciously.

Why am I talking about night dreams?

In the day time, we can be very pretentious, ‘thinking that we are the best’.

At night, the consciousness is not so clear.

So, in the dream, you cannot be pretentious.

You tell yourself, ‘Tonight, I will dream of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas.’

During the day time, you can use your mouth to talk about this. You can even draw them. But at night you cannot have any control over your dreams.

Our dreams do not depend on our imagination.  You wish you can dream about Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, but you might end up dreaming ghosts and goblins.

Our dreams often reflect our learning of the Buddha Dharma. We can see for ourselves if there is any improvement.

For instance, before learning the Buddha Dharma, a man might often have bad dreams. He was chased after by others or seeing terrifying scenes.

After his recitation of Amitabha Buddha, all his bad dreams disappear. This shows that he is advancing on the path. Gradually, he will often see the loving and kind people in his dreams, witnessing comfortable happenings.

Maybe he does not have dreams on Buddhas or Bodhisattvas who are enveloped in lights, or that all the good men are reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha together, but his dreams will still be quite happy.

Is not this a form of auspicious dreams? (Great Master Shandao closed his eyes and the World of Ultimate Bliss in the west will come forth. He is the Patriarch. We cannot reach that state.) 

An extract from ‘Hearing your voice’-By Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong

问:梦中见到过世的人,在梦中念佛请佛来接引,梦到佛放光,地上出现了放光的莲花,过世的人踏上莲花消失了。这个梦是否代表了过世的人得到往生?

答:首先,这个梦是善梦、吉祥的梦、好梦。是不是代表过世的人得到往生?单凭这个梦还不足以判断,可能是,也可能不是。可能是,因为梦见他乘莲花走了;可能不是,因为或许是梦里的一种幻象,一种意识的显现。但这算是一个好梦。

我们都希望晚上能睡个好觉,怎么做到夜梦吉祥?夜梦吉祥是要看你白天吉祥不吉祥。白天稀里糊涂、颠三倒四,然后晚上想做个好梦,基本上是不可能的。我们念佛,随顺因果,逆来顺受,业障消除,内心安顺,白天就比较平静、平淡、安稳,假以时日,晚上肯定睡得会比较舒服一些。即使年龄、身体的关系睡眠不是很好,但是还是比较安定,一定有这种相应。所以,夜梦吉祥就看白天吉祥不吉祥。

为什么谈到夜梦呢?白天还可以装,“打肿脸充胖子”,晚上意识比较涣散,做梦也装不成啊。你说“我今晚要做一个梦,梦里出现几尊佛、几尊菩萨”,白天你可以用嘴巴讲讲,可以画画,晚上梦不行啊,梦不是靠你的想象,想梦佛菩萨,说不定梦见了个恶鬼。所以,通过夜梦也能反映出我们学佛到底有没有进步。

比如,有的人学佛,以前经常做噩梦,被人追赶啊,一些恐怖的场景啊,念佛之后,噩梦的景象消失了,这就是进步。逐渐地,梦里总是见到可亲可爱的人物,都是挺舒服的一些事情,虽然谈不上梦见佛菩萨放光、诸上善人念佛之类的(像善导大师,眼睛一闭就是西方极乐世界的景象,人家是祖师,我们当然做不到),但是也蛮可意、可乐,这不也是夜梦吉祥吗?

Dharma Words by Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong (12)

1.

The causes and conditions resemble the road. Travelling by car, we must follow the road. We do not expect the road to follow us. Causes and conditions resemble the road while our mind is the car. We must act in accord with the causes and conditions. We cannot expect the causes and conditions to listen to us. Will it be fine if we do not act in accord with the causes and conditions? Of course, the answer is negative. Just imagine the consequences if we were to leave the road and travel on!

因缘如路

只有车顺路,没有路顺车。

因缘如路,人心如车。只有人听因缘的,没有因缘听人的。

不随顺因缘行不行?当然不可以,如同开车一定要脱路,结局可想而知。

In the commentary on the Shastra of Attaining a Rebirth, if you cannot remember all the teachings, you must remember this point, ‘Those who are born in that Pure Land, the Bodhisattvas, the man and devas who have conducted all kinds of activities are able to do so relying totally on the strength of Amitabha Thus Come One’s Original Vows.’ This is the conclusion of the teaching on the Shastra. Those who have attained a rebirth in the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha, it means those who have gone to the Pure Land. After their arrival, ‘All the activities which are carried out by the Bodhisattvas, the man and devas’ refer to their pervasive crossing over of living beings in other worlds, their learning of the Dharma, their ability to teach living beings come forth from the power of Amitabha Buddha’s Original Vows. This is the clearest explanation of the Commentary. We by ourselves do not have the power to carry out such activities.

《往生论注》如果别的话记不住,你就记住一句话:

“凡是生彼净土,及彼菩萨人天所起诸行,皆缘阿弥陀如来本愿力故”。

这是根本的结论。往生到阿弥陀佛净土,这是“往”,去的;

往生阿弥陀佛净土之后的“菩萨人天所起诸行”,到他方世界广度众生,上求下化,这一切都是靠阿弥陀佛本愿力。说得太彻底了,都不是我们个人的力量。

How to understand the word ‘meet’ in the phrase, ‘On meeting it, no one will be missed’

Question: 19. Contemplating the Original Vow of the Buddha, those who meet Him will not be in vain. How to explain the word meet?

‘Contemplating the Original Vows of the Buddha, those who meet Him will not be in vain. They will swiftly fulfil all the great jewel seas of merits and virtues.’ This is from the Shastra of Attaining a rebirth.

And I remember in the Sutra of Immeasurable Lifespan, there are these two paragraphs.

One of them is ‘By relying on the strength of the Buddha’s Original Vows, those who have heard his Name desire to attain a rebirth. All of them will arrive at that Land and attain No-retrogression, by themselves.’

These two passages are nearly the same in meanings. ‘By relying on the strength of the Buddha’s Original Vows’ and ‘Contemplating the Original Vows of the Buddha’ ‘All of them will arrive at that Land’ and ‘those who meet Him will not be in vain.’

This is the passage when the Buddha told Maitreya, ‘Those who have a chance to hear the Buddha’s Name, who rejoice excitedly even just in one mindfulness, you should know that such a man has obtained the greatest benefit. He is replete fully with the Unsurpassed merits and virtues.’

Vasubhandu Bodhisattva combines these two paragraphs and says,

‘Contemplating the Original Vows of the Buddha, those who meet Him will not be in vain. They will swiftly fulfil all the great jewel seas of merits and virtues.’

From these two paragraphs, the ‘Strength of the Original Vows’ is explained thus. At the Causal Ground, it is the Original Vows. At the Fruition Ground it is the spiritual strength of lights to rescue living beings. This is known as the strength of the Original Vows.

How to explain the word ‘meet’?

It means that ‘On hearing the Name we are filled with joyful faith.’ Or, ‘We are happy and excited.’ It means we are replete with the three minds. This is the standard explanation.

So, this is the meaning of ‘meet’.

The word ‘on hearing’ is not using the ears to listen. Of course, when the Name passes by your ears, you too listen to it. But it does not mean you hear it because ‘hearing’ can be either full hearing or incomplete hearing.

So, when we say the word ‘meet’, it means we are happy to hear the Name. –

‘Those who have heard the Buddha’s Name are filled with joy, are excited.’

This is truly meeting.

For example, I ask you, ‘Today, did you meet any one in town?’

‘No, I did not meet anyone. All are strangers.’

But in reality, you did meet people but you just walk past them without recognition.

But if he is your friend, that you have not seen him for three years, you will be so glad to see him, you will sit with him for a while.

So, ‘meet’ is seeing each other, the mind is thinking of each other.

But seeing without recognizing is not meeting. In the Chapter on the Perfect Penetration of Amitabha recitation, it is thus stated, ‘If the child is thinking of his mother, in the same way his mother is thinking of him, the mother and son are not apart from one another life after life. When living beings bring forth the mind to think of the Buddha, to be mindful of the Buddha, they will see the Buddha presently or in future.’

For the mother and son if one of them is always thinking while another is forgetful, even though the mother is thinking of her son, the son ran away. So, it is useless.

When we say ‘meet’ means both parties are coming together.

Or there is a response, a silent agreement. This is explained in the Sutra as, ‘On hearing the Name, one is joyful and excited.’

On hearing this Dharma Door, you will say, ‘I see! My attainment of a rebirth is confirmed! I am very sure I will arrive at the Pure Land!’

如何理解“遇无空过者”的“遇”字

问:“观佛本愿力,遇无空过者”这个“遇”字该怎么理解?

答:“观佛本愿力,遇无空过者,能令速满足,功德大宝海”,《往生论》这一段让我们联想到《无量寿经》的两段经文,一段就是“其佛本愿力,闻名欲往生,皆悉到彼国,自致不退转”。两者文句很相应,“其佛本愿力”与“观佛本愿力”,“皆悉到彼国”与“遇无空过者”。

还有一段是“付嘱弥勒文”,“其有得闻彼佛名号,欢喜踊跃乃至一念,当知此人为得大利,则是具足无上功德”。

天亲菩萨《往生论》是把这两段经文捏合在一起,说“观佛本愿力,遇无空过者,能令速满足,功德大宝海”。

如果就这两段文,“本愿力”,因地称为本愿,果上光明神力救度众生,称为本愿力。

这里的“遇”应该怎么解释呢?就是“闻其名号信心欢喜”,或者“欢喜踊跃”,也就是发得三心,这是规范性的解释,

这才叫“遇”,遇到了。

这里的“闻”,不是耳朵一过就是闻——耳朵一过当然也是闻,但不代表你闻到了,闻有具足闻和不具足闻。

所谓“遇”有两种,一个是内心欢喜,“其有得闻,彼佛名号,欢喜踊跃”,这叫遇到。比如问你“今天在大街上遇到谁没有?”“没遇到谁啊,我都不认识。”其实是遇到了,擦肩而过。但如果是朋友,三年没见面,遇到了很欢喜,去坐一坐。遇就是人和人见面,心和心之间发生交集,发生交会,这才叫遇。

如果见如未见,就不叫遇。《念佛圆通章》说:“若子忆母,如母忆时,母子历生,不相违远。若众生心,忆佛念佛,现前当来,必定见佛。”

母子二人,一人为忆,一人为忘,这样母亲虽然忆念孩子,孩子逃跑,这就没有用了。所以,“遇”必须是两者发生交集,也就是感应或者默契。经文的解释就是“闻其名号,欢喜踊跃”,听到这个法门,“哎!我往生已定了!我肯定可以到净土了!

The Proper Lineage, the source of the Pure Land Sect refers to the Commentary on the Shastra of Attaining a Rebirth by Great Master Tan Luan. It is based on the teaching of Nagarjuna Bodhisattva, the chapter on the Easy Practice, the Shastra of Attaining a rebirth by Vasubandhu Bodhisattva. It is the fundamental teachings of the Pure Land Sect in China.

Why should I mention this Proper Lineage, the source? It is because without the source, the meaning of the teaching is impure, improper. For instance, let us take the example of a tree. If we take a branch to be the trunk, it is unable to support the tree. If we use the branches as the building materials, they are not strong enough to become the centre pillar. Instead, we should look for the main trunk. By doing so, all the branches will be there too.

So, in the learning of the Pure Land Sect, we should first look for the trunk teaching.

净土宗的正脉源头,就是昙鸾大师的《往生论注》,它上承龙树菩萨的《易行品》、天亲菩萨的《往生论》,成为中国净土宗的奠基之作。

为什么要提这个正脉源头呢?因为如果失去这个源头,法义就不纯正,就不清净。就好像一棵树,把一根小树枝当作主干,它当然承担不起来;作为建筑材料,拿树枝当中柱,那当然也是不够的。一定要把它的主干找到,这样,枝节都收摄在其中了。

所以,我们对整个净土教法的理解,一定要找到它的主干。

When the false thoughts come forth, we remind ourselves to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. Will this be considered a continuity?

Question: While I was reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha, the false thoughts come forth. Then, suddenly I will think of Amitabha Buddha and I will continue to recite. Is this considered an interruption?

Answer: This is the way for a beginner. We are mundane men who are full of false thoughts. Even the experienced cultivator cannot avoid making such a fault. This is quite common. Anyway, if you maintain the recitation, this is considered a continuity in Amitabha recitation. If you are sure you want to attain a rebirth, you will attain a rebirth. Do not worried about this. Do not harbour any doubts.

There are two types of interruptions: one is from the practice while another is from the mind ground. From the angle of practice, interruptions are unavoidable when we stop reciting. But from the angle of faith, we believe in Amitabha Buddha and this will not change. We will always rely on Amitabha Buddha and we will not change in our resolution to attain a rebirth. In this way, our Amitabha recitation is uninterrupted.

起妄念之后想起佛号再念算不算相续

问:我念佛时起了妄想,但突然又想起佛号,继续念佛,这样算间断吗?

答:初机念佛的人一定是这样的。凡夫嘛,妄想杂念多,就是老修也避免不了。这是正常现象,保持这样念佛,就算是相续。如果决定愿往生,也一定往生,不用担心,不用怀疑。

间断有两种,一是从行相上,二是从心地上。从行相上来讲,当然是会间断的,不念的时候不就断了吗?但是从信愿这个立场上,一信就永信了,永远信靠阿弥陀佛,愿往生永不改变,这样念佛就是不间断的。

In the Pure Land Sect, the Original Vow of Amitabha Buddha is Amitabha Recitation. It means that by reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha we will accomplish Buddhahood.’

When we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, it is the moment we attain a rebirth. But when we are born in the Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, we will ultimately be enlightened to the Proper Enlightenment.

This is the meaning that the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha is the accomplishment of Buddhahood.

It is because in the Original Vows of Rescue of Amitabha Buddha ‘The attainment of a rebirth’ and ‘the accomplishment of Buddhahood’ carry the same meaning.

From the standpoint of living beings, it is known as the ‘the attainment of a rebirth.’ From the standpoint of Amitabha Buddha it is known as the ‘Proper Enlightenment’.

That is why the Buddha has thus said, ‘If you cannot attain a rebirth, I will not accomplish the Proper Enlightenment’. This is the same as the two sides of a weighing machine.  The attainment of a rebirth by living being is equivalent to Proper Enlightenment, equivalent to the accomplishment of Buddhahood.

The words of endorsement on the Primal Teachings of Contemplation Sutra-132 By Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong“

以净土宗弥陀本愿念佛来说,就是“念佛成佛”。我们念佛,往生是即时;可是,往生到极乐净土究竟开悟正觉,这就是念佛成佛。因为“往生”跟“成佛”在弥陀本愿救度里是同义词,在众生这边叫“往生”,在弥陀那边就叫“正觉”,所谓“若不生者,不取正觉”。就好像一个天平的左右两边,众生往生就等于正觉,等于成佛。

7 Is it really the case that we do not have to worry about our death bed?

Question: May I ask if it is really the case that we can attain a rebirth without considering the various conditions at our death bed?

真的不必顾虑临终吗

问:请问真的临终时无论什么情形都能往生吗?

Answer:

It all depends if we have abided by the teaching on ‘the accomplishment of the Karma while we are still living’, which means that we really take refuge in Amitabha Buddha always, that we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively.

If in our daily activities, we take refuge in Amitabha Buddha and recite His Name exclusively, no matter in what conditions we may pass away, for instance we might be killed in an air crash, we will still attain a rebirth. This is for sure.

Maybe we feel this is truly wonderful but for the Buddha, this is only a minor matter.

Do you think the Buddha cannot rescue you in an air crash? The spiritual penetration of the Buddha is inconceivable. So, this is a minor matter for the Buddha.

All the manifestations in the world are illusive. For the Buddha, the past can be transformed into the present, the future can become the past time also.

For the Buddha one person can become many people while many people can be transformed into one man. You can be transformed into me and I can be transformed into him. Self and others are inter-changeable. There is no problem in this at all as all of them are only empty space, illusive shadow.

So, it is very common in the Buddha’s eyes. We talk about birth and death, the afflictions of birth and death and other issues just like the flowers in the empty space.

There is no statement to indicate what kind of conditions you should dwell in at your death bed in order the Buddha can save you more easily.

The only consideration is if you truly take refuge in the Buddha and recite His Name while you are alive!

答:前提是平常有没有“平生业成”,平常有没有完全归命阿弥陀佛、一向专念。如果平时归命、一向专念,那当然临终无论什么情形都决定往生,即使坐飞机出了空难也决定往生。我们可能觉得这是很了不起的事情,但是对佛来讲这根本不算什么,在天上飞着,飞机爆炸了,佛都救不了你吗?凭佛的神通道力,那都根本不算什么,本来这都是虚幻的,对佛来讲过去可以成为现在,未来也可以成为过去,一人可以作多人,多人可以作一人,你可以作我,我可以作他,自他相换,完全没有任何问题。虚空幻影一样,对佛来讲不算什么,什么生啊死啊,生死烦恼,等如空花,并没有说你在怎么样死的情况下佛才更好救你,就看你平常有没有归命。

What is the relationship of Amitabha recitation to attain a rebirth and the cultivation of five precepts and the ten wholesome deeds?

Question: How to relate Amitabha recitation to attain a rebirth with the cultivation of five precepts and ten wholesome deeds?    

Answer:

As a Buddha disciple he should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively to seek a rebirth. This is a must. Besides, it is achievable by anyone.

On the other hand, to abide by the five precepts, to uphold the ten wholesome deeds, this may not be achieved by all.

So, we should try our best to abide by the five precepts, to practise the ten good deeds. We should learn to abide by the five precepts, four precepts, three precepts and such like even if we do not take the precepts. We should thus understand.

When we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively, we will be more stable and have the power to abide by the precepts. This is the bestowment, the strength of the Buddha Dharma.

For example, originally, we do not have the conditions to take vegetarian food. Or we cannot bring forth the mind to become a vegetarian. After reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha for some time, we will gradually and naturally choose to become a vegetarian. Moreover, the wholesomeness of precepts subdues us to be more amiable. This is good for an Amitabha reciter. It means that Amitabha recitation and the wholesomeness of precepts have the good effect on each other. Basically, Amitabha recitation is to seek a rebirth.

念佛往生与五戒十善的关系如何

问:专修念佛求往生,与修持五戒十善的关系如何?

答:专修念佛求往生,作为佛弟子,这是必须的,而且谁都做得到;而五戒十善,有人未必做得到。五戒十善要随份随力尽力去做,五戒、四戒、三戒等等;即使没有受戒,也应当去做:要这样理解。

专修念佛,会让我们在戒善方面更加稳定有力,这是佛法的护持力量。比如,原来没有条件吃素,或者发不了这个心,专修念佛久了,渐渐地自然就吃素了。同时,如果戒善调柔的话,对专修念佛也有好处。就是说,念佛与戒善互相促进,念佛往生是根本。

A pleasant life with blooming flowers, ripening fruits by Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong

【甜蜜人生 花开结果】

A man is the combination of body and mind. So, our life is comprised of both the body and mind. When the body is strong while the mind is weak, this mind will listen to the order of the body. He leads a life stressing on his body. On the contrary, when his life is led by his mind, the body will listen to the mind. He leads a life stressing on mind development.

A man who stresses on the importance of his body is greedily attached to the five desires. When he is young, he gets indulged in the enjoyment of love and sex.

Very soon he will be old and he is despair of his future. This is because the body will undergo birth, old age, illness and death, in accord with the rhythm of impermanence objectively. The body will deteriorate from bad to worse. The man is going down the slope of life and he is sad and hopeless. Many people heave a sigh when they are at forty as it resembles the setting sun. At fifty, he is sorrowful as his hair starts to turn white. He has already spent half of his life. At sixty he is considered old and haggard. After the retirement he feels he is useless as no one will pay any attention to him. At seventy, he calls himself the rare species, living on to wait for his death. At the age of eighty, he lives in fright of death every day. People despise him because of his existence. He is considered a waste of natural resources. His existence is disgusted as people feel ‘it is better for him to die’. Finally, he passes away hopelessly and every one heaves a sigh of relieve!

A man who places high importance on mental development desire a life of purity with great ease. If he is able to have faith in the Buddha and recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, he can maintain a youthful and lively mind. Day by day his life of bright illumination is enhanced. Though he still grows old, his mind remains young. As the mind is lively his physical body will be at ease.

As he gets older, his cultivation in Amitabha recitation becomes even more profound. With the illumination of the Buddha’s lights, his mind is softened and he becomes very gentle. The mind is stable and settled. It resembles the ripe fruits which become sweeter and more fragrant day by day. An Amitabha reciter is heading towards purity and bright illumination in this life. He is full of hope.

As he grows older, he would strongly feel that he is such a blessed man, that his life is getting richer and richer.

He is always so happy and joyful, without realizing he is approaching old age.

At any stage of life, he feels that is the best for him, that this is the way of life. 

If his lifespan will come to an end tonight, he feels it is fine with him. But if he has to live to a hundred years old, he will not complain either.

When he leaves this world, it is like the ripe fruit which falls to the ground naturally. On the attainment of a rebirth in the Pure Land, he will dwell in the jewel lotus.

So, if you wish for a blessed life, it is very easy. You only have to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

With our mind taking refuge in Amitabha Buddha we are endowed with abundant bliss and blessings, a sweet and happy life, a life with the blooming of lotus, the ripening of fruits.

人由身与心合成,故人的生活也是由身与心两部分组成。

若身强心弱,心听于身,说为以身生活;心主导身,身随顺心,即以心生活。

以身生活的人,贪图五欲,年轻时放纵声色,很快衰老便觉前途无望。因身体之生老病死乃是客观规律,身体总是越来越差,故其生活完全是在走下坡路,悲观绝望是必然。

很多人四十岁便叹入中年,如日西坠;

五十岁悲白发染鬓,年过半百;

六十岁被视为老朽,退休靠边;

七十岁即自称古稀,活着等死;

八十岁自己提心吊胆,日日怕死,他人以为浪费资源,嫌为“老不死”。

最后终于百般无奈地死了,大家都松了一口气。

以心生活的人,向往清净自在。若能信佛念佛,可永葆心之年青、活力,而且越活越觉前途光明。身虽会老心不老,心有活力则身体也觉轻便。

随着年龄增长,念佛日深,佛光熏染,心越来越柔软,越来越积淀,如瓜果成熟,越来越甜蜜、芳香。

故念佛人在现世的生活向上、向净、向着光明,有无限希望,年纪越大幸福感越强,生命越加丰富饱满,满怀喜乐,不知老之将至,任何生命时段都是好年华、正当年。今晚离世心满足,再活百岁也不嫌。其离别此世如瓜熟蒂落,往生净土则神诞宝莲。

想过幸福的生活很简单,只要念佛。

心归弥陀,幸福多多;甜蜜人生,花开结果。

Art and Pure Land by Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong.

What is art? Art is beauty.

It is the process to look for beauty, to express beauty and to reveal beauty.

Pure Land is the pure beauty, the ultimate beauty, the limitless beauty.

In the Sutra ‘Immeasurable adornments’ is used to describe this beauty.

That is why all the artist should seek a rebirth in the Pure Land.

The source of creativity of the artists comes from the natural environment. After extracting, it undergoes the process of refinery.

It will far-surpass the natural states, in the same way like Dharmakara Bodhisattva who had gathered in the 210 billion Buddha Lands to get the refined extracts, to accomplish the adornments of the World of Ultimate Bliss. The Land becomes the most supreme Land, the foremost.

So, all the artists should be able to penetrate the Mind Ground of Amitabha Buddha’s Vows of Adornment.

艺术是什么?

艺术是美。发现美,创造美,表现美。

净土是纯美、绝美、无限美,经中说“无量庄严”。所以艺术家应该求生净土。

艺术取材自然,经过提炼,超越自然,如同法藏菩萨摄取二百一十亿诸佛国土精华,成就极乐庄严,最胜第一。

所以艺术家应该更能领会法藏菩萨的“愿心庄严”。

Genuine Great Kindness and Great Compassion in Buddhism

佛教真正的大慈大悲

The 18th truly reveals the genuine life of Amitabha Buddha. And it is the true spirits of Amitabha Buddha’s Great Kindness and Great Compassion.

In Buddhism, we talk about ‘Great Kindness and Great Compassion’.

This can be found in the 18th Vow. With this Vow, every one of us can attain a rebirth. With this Vow only then the Kindness and Compassion of the Buddha Dharma is realized.

If the 18th Vow is left out, we will surely be very frightened and uneasy as we will not receive the benefits of ‘Great Kindness and Great Compassion.’

As a conclusion, the importance of the 18th Vow is listed briefly in the following five points:

1. The 18th Vow is the Only road of escape for the sinful mundane men.

2. The 18th Vow is the foundation for setting up the Pure Land Sect.

3. The 18th Vow is the original intention for Sakyamuni Buddha to enter the world.

4. The 18th Vow is the Genuine life of Amitabha Buddha as this Vow is different from other Buddhas, far-surpassing other Buddhas.

5. The 18th Vow is the genuine Great Kindness and Great Compassion in Buddhism.

这第十八愿才体现了阿弥陀佛的真生命,也真正体现了阿弥陀佛的大慈大悲,或者说,体现了我们佛教大慈大悲的精神。佛教讲的“大慈大悲”,就在这第十八愿。因为有了这一愿,我们每一个人都可以往生,我们才能体会到佛法的慈悲。如果拿掉了这第十八愿,我们内心里边就有恐惧和不安,我们也得不到“大慈大悲”的利益。总结一下,第十八愿的重要性,略说五点:

(一)第十八愿是造罪凡夫的唯一出路。

(二)第十八愿是净土宗的立宗根本。

(三)第十八愿是释迦牟尼佛的出世本怀。

(四)第十八愿是阿弥陀佛的真实生命。别于诸佛,超于诸佛。

(五)第十八愿是佛教真正的大慈大悲。

My father was so Youthful after Passing away!

The sun arose in seven colours, with the sky full of lotuses

日现七彩,满天莲花


My father is Upasaka Li Jian Gang. He stayed in Ping Dong, at Dong Gang town.  My father is very jovial, righteous and kind-hearted. While working as a government officer, he had acquired the knowledge on taxation swiftly. Later, he made use of this knowledge to help the public. As such he is quite famous in town, creating good affinities with the public.

At the age of seventeen, father entered the air force communication and machinery school and became a soldier. After the second world war, he lived through the warfare of communism and followed the troop to Taiwan. Thus he was separated from his family in China for more than ten years. In a generation of sufferings for more than ten years, my father stayed alone in Taiwan in very difficult conditions. As it is hopeless to find a way home, he decided to stay put in Taiwan. Besides, he also became an officer after his retirement from the air force. He works for the people at the local taxation office. Later he got married with my mother and a family was established.

In the second half of the year 2007 my father was sent to 802 hospital the second time as he was unwell. But the doctor could not find the causes of his illness. Mother was very worried and every day, she would seek the help of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva at the Buddha Hall in the Hospital, hoping father would be fine soon. But as time goes on, his illness deteriorated.  One day, I went to visit him at the hospital after work. Mother was crying on seeing me, saying that father might not be able to cross this difficult juncture. I was feeling sad too, reflecting on the happy hours with my dad. Now, thinking about this, I am still very sad. But I knew I had to be strong. I consoled my mother and I was thinking how to seek help from the Buddha Dharma.

While I was seeking help from the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, I heard about a Dharma Master who was conducting life releasing in Qijin in Gaoxiong. At that time, small statues of Earth Store Bodhisattvas were made to create good affinity with the public. So, I followed what I knew in the Dharma Door of rescue of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas and sought my mother to donate the twenty thousand dollars which belongs to my father. Half of the money was used to create the small statues of Earth Store Bodhisattva while another half is used in life liberation, on behalf of my father.

The next day, I followed Shifu and the other Buddhists to the sea-side to release live forms. On the lorry, the big box of fish is   labelled with three pieces of red paper, with my father’s Name written on the middle sheet, showing that he was the merits receiver of life liberation. But I have no time to tell my parents. That evening, I went to visit my dad. When I opened the door, I heard my father was talking to mother, saying that he saw a big piece of red paper in the air, with his name written on it.

That night, mother had a dream. She was getting ready to take a plane with father. The airport was a wide field of green grass, with flowing rivers and forests all around it. There was this plane on the grass field. When they were getting ready to go up the plane, father suddenly said that he was to defecate. So, my mother helped him to a hidden place to pass it out. At that time, a lady carried a luggage went up the plane, followed by other men and women, and also some elders. The plane departed and mother woke up. Reflecting on the dream, she felt strongly that father would be healthy soon. It was truly inconceivable as my dad was miraculously cured day by day and returned home.

Later, I am most fortunate to have the opportunity to read the instructional talks by the Elder Master Guang Qin. The deepest impression I have about his teaching is the recitation of ‘Namo Amitabha Buddha’ is known ‘reciting all’. It means that the Buddha’s Name encompasses all the Merits and Virtues of all the Buddhas in the ten directions, all the merits and virtues of all Bodhisattvas, all the merits and virtues of the Great Cannon Store of Sutras and Mantras. All the merits and virtues are inclusive in this recitation: Namo Amitabha Buddha. After I have understood the meaning I was truly joyful. From then onwards, I asked my mother to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively and transfer the merits to my dad.

From the year 2011 onwards, mother also advised father to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha with her before going to sleep. In this way my dear parents recited Namo Amitabha Buddha continually every night.

Before this, father would write the spring couplets and gave them to people as gifts to create good affinity. In the year 2011, he could even write the spring couplets and put them up by himself. But in November, the year 2018, father was already very weak. On the tenth of November, he was still reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha before going to sleep. But on the eleventh of November, he woke up at three in the morning. His body was twisting and moving without any reasons. Mother gave him a cup of water and he took a sip. After a while, father opened his eyes suddenly. With his very bright eyes, he was looking at the upper part of the empty space. Then he closed his eyes. After a while he opened his eyes again and with the shiny eyes, he was staring at the space above. Slowly, he closed his eyes and passed way, with his head slanting to one side.

Something inconceivable happened when my dad passed away. In just a few minutes, my mother observed that the face of my father was transformed into a youthful look, with shiny skin. The wrinkles were gone. His hair was nicely combed and he looked so adorned and calm. The transformation was so great. It was truly miraculous, inconceivable. We have never heard of that before. Later, after a few days, his white eyebrows were changed into dark black in colour, with two ear-lobes growing out at his two ears.

Later, I sent my father to the funeral parlour at Ping Dong. As I was practising the Secret Sect, I looked out for the Secret sect brother to help me. But as he was in seclusion, he could not come. So, I went up the internet to look for a way place which provide aided recitation. When the causes and conditions are ripe, I was so lucky to contact the Pure Land Sect, the Shandao Monastery. The Dharma Master immediately sent the lotus friends and arranged for aided recitation.

Dharma Master told my father about the unconditional rescue of Amitabha Buddha and my family was very touched. I was thus thinking, ‘This is truly what I want. This Dharma Door enables my father to accomplish a perfect life.’ So, I respectfully sought the help of the Dharma Master from the Shandao Monastery to arrange and conduct the funeral rites. On the day of saying good bye to my father, it started drizzling at four in the morning, just like the sprinkling of sweet dew dharma water. At about six in the morning, the sun arose. On our way to the funeral parlour, my sister and I saw the whole sky was filled up with golden cloud which resembles the lotuses. We were very happy to witness this.

After the cremation, I carried my father’s remains to be kept in memory in Fo Guang Shan. Looking out from the car’s window, the golden sun was surrounded by beautiful circular lights of seven colours. By the sides of the sun are two red lotuses, one looks bigger while the other is smaller. I told my mother about this and she said that the small lotus might belong to the two -month -old baby who was lost in a miscarriage when mother was young. The bigger lotus should belong to my father. Amitabha Buddha had come to bring father and the small baby home to the World of Ultimate Bliss.

The supreme manifestation in my father’s attainment of rebirth greatly enhanced our faith in Amitabha recitation. Besides, we also listen to the Dharma teaching by the Dharma Masters who give their instructions in accord with the teaching of Great Master Shandao. After reflecting on the teaching, I understand that Amitabha Buddha will never renounce any living beings. He will surely rescue them.

On witnessing the revelation of my father at his death bed, I truly understand that the Pure Land Dharma Door is most suitable with the root potential of living beings at this Dharma Ending Age. Besides the Strength of Amitabha Buddha’s Great Vows are genuine, not fake. By relying on His strength, we will immediately receive the ultimate rescue of Amitabha Buddha. That is why in 2019, during the Vesak day, there was a refuge ceremony at the Shandao Monastery. My mother and I had taken refuge in Dharma Master Shi Hui Jing.

Having experienced the inconceivability of Amitabha recitation, we have extended the Dharma assembly of crossing over the deceased from forty -nine days to a hundred days. At Shandao Monastery. The memorial tablet of my father was placed in Shandao Monastery for the whole year. I would drive my mother from Dong Gant to Shandao Monastery to attend the group practice in Amitabha Buddha recitation at least once a month.

After I have learnt about Amitabha Buddha’s Dharma Door of Rescue and have understood the teachings of Great Master Shandao, there is a positive change in my life. My life is meaningful and I can feel the joy in my practice. I am most grateful to Amitabha Buddha.

 我的父亲季建纲居士,住在屏东的东港镇,他开朗幽默,正直厚道。因为脑筋灵活,担任公务员时,很快就学习到税赋的专业知识,日後发挥所长,帮助了许多民众。他的人缘很好,地方上小有名气。

父亲十七岁起便就读空军通信机械学校,开始了军旅生涯。抗日胜利後,历经国共战争,跟随国军来到台湾,和亲人相隔两岸,达数十年。大时代的悲剧下,父亲只身在台,受尽了苦楚。那时回乡无望,就定居了下来,不久就从军职转任公职,在地方税捐处为人民服务,也和母亲结了一生之缘,成立家庭。

2007年下半年,父亲因身体不适,第二次住进八〇二医院,刚开始一直查不出病因。母亲忧心重重,每天清晨就到医院的佛堂祈求观世音菩萨加被,让父亲转危为安。然而,随着时间推移,父亲的病况却急转直下。有一天,我下班後迳往病房探视,母亲一见我,便不断啜泣哽咽,说父亲可能度不过这次的难关。当下的我真是百味杂陈,一幕幕和父亲相处的画面瞬间闪过眼前;及今思之,依然难忍悲楚。但我知道自己必须振作,一面安抚母亲,一面积极思考如何求助於佛法。

就在对着慈悲的佛菩萨求救时,我得知有一位法师要在高雄旗津放生,刚好也有制作地藏菩萨的小佛像和人们结缘,於是依我所认知的佛菩萨救度法门,当下我请母亲拿出父亲身上的所有现金二万元,一部分随喜地藏菩萨小佛像,另一部分以父亲的名字放生。

第二天我和师父、佛教徒们一起去海边放生,看见一辆卡车上的大鱼箱贴着三张红纸条,父亲斗大的名字就写在中间的纸条上,表明为放生的功德主。这件事我尚未和爸妈提起。当天傍晚,我去病房探视父亲,在推开房门之际,听到父亲已清醒过来,正和母亲聊天,并且说在虚空中看到一张红纸,纸上有他的名字。

当天晚上,母亲梦到她和父亲要准备去搭飞机。机场在一大片的青绿草皮上,溪流、树林环绕,而草坪上就停有一架飞机。正要搭机时,父亲突然想要排便,母亲就搀扶他到隐秘处解下。这时有一位妇女拿着行李上飞机,陆陆续续有男有女、有年老者也都上了飞机,飞机就飞走了,於是母亲就醒了。母亲忖思着梦境,马上强烈地感觉到父亲的病一定能好转。不可思议,父亲果然一天好过一天,没多久就出院回家了。

後来我有机会恭读广钦老和尚的开示书籍,印象很深刻的是,老和尚说一句「南无阿弥陀佛」就是总诵,意思是说,十方诸佛、十方菩萨和包括大藏经和一切咒语的所有功德,都包含在六字洪名里面了,我明白了以後无比欢喜,请母亲此後专称「南无阿弥陀佛」,回向给父亲。

2011年起,母亲也劝父亲晚上入睡前和她一起称念「南无阿弥陀佛」圣号,就这样每天晚上二老念佛不断。

以往每年农历年前父亲会写春联和人结缘,2011年他还能亲自贴上自家的春联;到了2018年11月,父亲身体变得更加虚弱。11月10日那天夜里,依然念着「南无阿弥陀佛」入睡,却在11月11日凌晨3点多醒来,不知为什麽一直扭动身体,母亲倒了半杯水给他喝下。过了一会儿,父亲忽然睁开双眼,当时父亲的眼睛异常明亮且往上方的虚空看着,尔後闭上了眼睛。不一会儿,又再次睁开眼睛,眼神也是非常明亮地望着上方,接着就轻轻闭上双眼,头往旁边一软,就此舍报了。

最不可思议的是,父亲才刚断气舍报,母亲当下目睹父亲的脸形在短短几分钟内变化成很年轻的容貌,皮肤光滑了,不再有皱纹,头发也变得整齐,神态庄严安详。因为变化这麽的大,实在太奇妙了,无法想像,闻所未闻。後来的几天里,父亲原来白色的眉毛转成浓黑,两个耳朵也都长出耳珠子了。

後来我将父亲的遗体送到屏东市的殡仪馆。当时我是修学密宗的,立即去找密宗的师兄帮忙,但当时他正在闭关修法不能前来,我只好上网寻找助念的道场。因缘具足,很幸运地找到了净土宗善导寺,法师立即安排莲友们一起来助念。法师向父亲讲解阿弥陀佛的无条件救度,家人听了都非常感动。我心想,这就是我要的,可以帮父亲圆满人生的法门,所以往生的佛事都礼请善导寺的法师协助处理。

告别式那天早上四点多,本来非常好的天气却下了一场毛毛雨,就像甘露法水;六点多,曙光初露,在前往告别式的路途上,我和姊姊看到天空布满了像莲花一般的金色云朵,家人看了满心欢喜。

父亲火化後,我抱着父亲的遗骨要送到佛光山去奉安,望向车外,金光耀眼的太阳外围有着美丽的七彩光圈,太阳的旁边还有两朵红色莲花一小一大的。後来我把这个奇景告诉母亲,母亲推论,小的莲花也许是年轻时小产的两个月大的婴儿的,而大的莲花就是父亲的,阿弥陀佛顺便让小baby随着父亲往生到极乐世界了。

父亲往生的殊胜事蹟让我们对念佛更加有信心,也因听闻了法师们开示的善导大师思想,思维再三,知道阿弥陀佛不舍众生,必定救度。自己更藉由父亲的临终示现,知道净土法门与末法的众生根机非常相应,而且弥陀愿力真实不虚,依靠他力,就可以得到即时究竟的救度。所以隔年(2019)的浴佛节,善导寺举办皈依,我和妈妈就皈依了慧净上人。

又因为感受到念佛的不可思议,本来父亲在善导寺七七四十九天的超度法会可以圆满,但家人又延长做到百日,牌位也放在善导寺一整年,并且会每个月至少一次,从东港载母亲到善导寺参加共修。

自从学习阿弥陀佛的救度法门,明白善导大师思想,整个人生观变得更加的积极快乐,非常感恩。

南无阿弥陀佛!

Two explanations in ‘Single-minded recitation.’

The meaning of single-minded recitation: by Dharma Master Shi Jing Zong

一心之义

There are two explanations in ‘Single-minded recitation.’

One of them is based on a calm and peaceful mind while the other is based on one’s effort. In the Pure Land Sect, we explain from the angle of a mind which is at ease and assured. Meanwhile in the Doors of the Sagely Path, as they do not realize this mind of being calm at ease, they will always stress on self-effort.

‘Being calm at ease’ means that ‘I will rely totally on this Buddha without a change of mind, without second thought.’  This is the meaning of reciting single-mindedly. Everyone can do it. The Buddha told us, ‘You should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha single-mindedly. Do not do unnecessary thinking. Do not harbour doubts whether you can or cannot attain a rebirth in Amitabha recitation.’

It means that you just recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. That is all. This is the meaning of a single-minded practice.

What is meant by the single-minded practice with self -effort? It means that I recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. I have reached the state of single-minded recitation with no confusion, at the phenomena level or at the noumena level. When you have arrived at the single-minded recitation at the phenomena level, you are an Arahant. When you have arrived at the noumenal level of single-minded recitation, you have ascended the Bodhisattva ground, the position of fruition. Your ignorance is destroyed and you have certified to the Patience of No-birth. None of us can achieve that!

So, explanations given at such a high level will never be reached by a mundane man. Moreover, this is not the explanation taught in the Pure Land Sect.

Amitabha Sutra is spoken by Sakyamuni Buddha for the sake of living beings in the evil worlds of five turbidities. It is the Dharma which is very difficult for people to believe.

The five turbidities refer to the turbidity of Kalpas, the turbidity of views, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of living beings, the turbidity of lifespan.

In such a world, living beings are born with very little good roots. So, how can we expect them to arrive at the state of single-mindedness at the phenomena level, the noumena level?

The Buddha always speaks the Dharma in accord with the potential of living beings. The Buddha will never ask the mundane men to do something which is unachievable by them. That is why he told us to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha single-mindedly.

That is why Great Master Shandao thus explained, ‘You should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha single-mindedly, exclusively and bring forth the Vow to wish for the attainment of a rebirth.’

This is good enough. All of us can do this.

The Sutra passage is the same but people give different explanations. The different explanations will bring on the different ways of cultivation.  When the understanding and practice are different, there are the varieties in practice, either exclusively or a mixture.

We should rely on the explanation given by the Great Master Shandao, who is the revelation of Amitabha Buddha. This is the safest, the most appropriate teaching.

The Patriarch Shandao has thus said, ‘A mundane man who does not recite Namo Amitabha Buddha can be very clever. No one is comparable to him as he can study so fast. He is enlightened to the path just by listening to the Dharma teaching once. He can recite all the Sutras in the Three Treasury of Sutras, the Twelve Divisions Canon and memorize them all by heart!

Without relying on the Vows and Strength of Amitabha Buddha, a man who seeks to be liberated from birth and death in this life, in this instant, to leave the triple realms, to be born in the World of Ultimate Bliss, to accomplish Buddhahood, will be unable to find the Door to enter!’

This is because the attainment of a rebirth does not rely on those practices which are not in accord with the Buddha’s Vows!

关于“一心”,有二种解释,一个是安心方面的,一个是功夫上的。

净土宗都从安心上来解释,圣道门因为不了解净土门的安心,总是从功夫上来理解。 “安心” 就是说, “我一心一意靠倒这尊佛,不改变,没有二心”. 这叫一心,谁都做得到。佛告诉我们说:“你要一心念佛,你不要想七想八,你不要怀疑念佛不能往生。” 你好好念佛就好了,这叫一心。

“功夫”的一心是什么呢? 就是我念佛、我行持的功夫达到事一心不乱、理一心不乱。事一心不乱就证得阿罗汉果位了,理一心不乱就是达到登地菩萨果位了,破无明、证无生法忍了。那没有一个做得到的。所以,那样的解释,不是我们凡夫做得来的,也不是净土宗的解释。

这一部《阿弥陀经》是释迦牟尼佛为五浊恶世众生说此难信之法,五浊是劫浊、见浊、烦恼浊、众生浊、命浊,众生都善根薄少,哪能达到事一心、理一心不乱呢? 佛说法对机,决定不会要求凡夫做你做不到的事情,就是叫你要一心念佛。

所以,善导和尚解释说: “一心专念阿弥陀佛,愿往生者”,这样就对了,我们都做得到。

所以,同样的经文有不同的解释,不同的解释引导不同的修行。解行不同,专杂有异。

我们依弥陀示现的善导和尚的解释,是最稳当、最正确的。

善导祖师曰:

一个凡夫人,任你聪明绝顶,盖世无双,一目千行,一闻千悟,三藏十二部倒背如流,不称南无阿弥陀佛,不乘阿弥陀佛愿力,欲得当生、当下了生死、出三界、生极乐,成佛道,门都没有!

因为往生极乐世界,不靠那些,不顺彼佛愿故!

Can Amitabha recitation be applied in prenatal education?

Question:

In pregnancy, will the foetus be benefitted when the mother recites Namo Amitabha Buddha, listens to the Sutra teachings? Is there any effect on the foetus if the mother recites Namo Amitabha Buddha silently?

Answer:

The benefits are very great. The foetus will surely be benefitted.

Some people invite the Dharma Master to give bestowment when they buy a house, a car and such external things.

Now your child is in your tummy and you recite Namo Amitabha Buddha to bring the bestowment of the Buddha on him, this is truly terrific!

Moreover, mother and child are of the same mind as they are closely connected in body. The effect will be very great.

If you wait for him to be born and give the bestowment after a few years, the effect will not be the same.

‘Is there any effect on the foetus if the mother recites Namo Amitabha Buddha silently?’

Of course, there is a positive effect on the child.

When we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, our whole body will emit the bright illumination of the Buddha Dharma.

The foetus will be comfortable in the warmth of the lights, experience the kindness and compassion and his hindrances are eradicated.

He has started his life on a different level in comparison to other children. They are not on the same platform.

As parents, if we wish our child to become a wonderful man, this cannot be done by sending him to a school only, to get a full mark. We should do it while the child is still in the stomach and give him bestowment of the Buddha. We should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha every day and transfer all the blessings and virtues to the child.

When he enters the world, he will be very different from other people.

念佛是否可以起到胎教的作用

问:怀孕时念佛、听经,肚里的宝宝可以得利益吗?母亲默念可以起到胎教的作用吗?

答:那太得利益了,绝对蒙受利益。有人请法师去开光加持什么房啊,车啊,毕竟东西还在外边。你现在孩子放在肚里面加持,不得了,很厉害啊;而且母子同心、母子连体,效果特别大。如果等他生下来了,长了几岁再加持他,就不一样了。

“母亲默念可以起到胎教的作用吗?”绝对的。我们念佛的时候,周身会释放出佛法的光明,孩子在母亲肚里就非常舒服,感受到慈悲,会消业障。他已经和别的孩子不在一个起跑线、一个平台上了。父母如果想让孩子将来优秀,不是到学校里给他上课,让他考满分,是在肚子里时就给他把底肥打足。天天念佛,把他的福德加足,他一出来就已经和别人不一样了。
