Dharma Words of Great Master Shandao (2)

2. Having faith in the Original Vows of Amitabha Buddha

1.

a. We truly believe that we are the sinful, evil mundane men.

Throughout the Long Kalpas we are sinking in transmigration, without a condition to leave sufferings.

b. We truly believe in the forty-eight Vows of Amitabha Buddha which are aiming to gather in all living beings without any doubts and hesitation.

By relying on His Strength of Vows we will surely attain a rebirth.

2.

Profoundly deep mind refers to the Genuine faith:

We believe that we are indeed the mundane men with lots of afflictions.

We are lacking in wholesome good roots. We transmigrate in the triple realm and we cannot leave the burning house.

Now we truly believe in the Original Vows of Amitabha Buddha, His magnificent Vows.

And if we recite His Name as few as ten times or one time and such like, we will attain a rebirth.

We do not doubt in this at all.

So, this is known as the profoundly deep mind.

-Verses of Praise in bowing and attaining a Rebirth

3.

Having only good faith, we harbour no doubt.

We will attain a rebirth relying on the Strength of the Buddha’s Vows.

4.

Contemplation is illumination.

We will always use the hand of a pure and faithful mind to carry the bright lights of Wisdom, to illuminate the proper reward, the supporting rewards and such matters in the Land of Amitabha Buddha. -Section on Hidden Meaning

5.

Sakyamuni Thus Come One is indeed our kind and compassionate parents.

By using all kinds of expedients, he enables us to bring forth the Mind of Unsurpassed faith.

– Verses of praise on Pratyutpanna Samadhi

6.

Amitabha the World Honoured One brought forth the profoundly deep Vows, that he will use his Name of bright illumination to subdue and transform all living beings in the ten directions.

We only have to bring forth a mind of good faith to recite the Buddha’s Name, to seek a rebirth.

– Verses of Praise on making obeisance to attain a rebirth

7.

At that moment, our terror is indescribable.

We are thinking in this way:

Going back now I will die. Staying here I will die too. Going forth I will die too.

No matter how, I cannot escape death.

I will just follow this path and walk on.

Since there is a road, I am sure I will be saved.

After thinking in this way, on the eastern shore suddenly I heard the voice of exhortation,

‘Humane One! You should be resolute to take this path. You will not face the disaster of death. But if you stay put, you will die.’

On the western shore a man is calling,

‘You walk straight on, single-mindedly with right mindfulness.

I am able to protect you.

You will be fearless as you will not fall into the disaster of water and fire.’

On hearing the exhortation and the calling, the man brings forth the proper mindfulness in body and mind as he has decided to walk this path resolutely. He has no doubts, nor fear as he will not retreat from this path.

8.

Most thankful to Sakyamuni Buddha for pointing out the Western World, sending us to the Pure Land.

On top of that we are told of the compassionate Amitabha Buddha’s call for us to return home.

Now, I have faith in the two Honoured Ones and I will act in accord with their wishes.

I am not afraid of the two rivers of water and fire.

In every thought, I will walk on the Path of His Vows, relying on the Buddha’s strength.

After passing away, I will be born in the Western Land to see the Buddha.

What an occasion of rejoicing it would be!

9.

My mind is replete with the profound faith which is as solid and firm as the Vajra.

It is not moved nor destroyed by all the deviant views, divergent knowledge, different explanations of different practices.

My mind is in one resolution, that I will walk straight on the Path.

10

Do not discuss if Amitabha Buddha wants to gather us in or not.

The whole issue lies in us, whether we are willing to return home, or unwilling.

As long as we are resolute in mind, that we want to go home, at our death bed, the flowery cover will surely come forth to welcome us.

11

Pervasively I exhort all the practitioners of the same practice who have affinity to direct your mind to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha exclusively.

Do not doubt this, please.

12

Suddenly I think of the Bliss in that Land.

I have no doubt at all as I know it is meant for every living being.

-Verses of Praise on Pratyutpanna Samadhi

13

There is no query on sins and blessings, the timespan of our practice and the number of recitations.

Just recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Do not harbour any doubts!

  信知自身是具足烦恼凡夫,善根薄少,流转三界,不出火宅;

  一种不免死者;

意在专心回不回;
